I recently spent a fun weekend trip to the Santa Barbara county towns of Buellton, Solvang, and Los Olivos. We rode bikes from Buellton through Solvang and on to Los Olivos, about a 20 mile round trip. It’s a great area for gardeners to visit with lots of wineries, olive oil tasting, even a lavender farm. The towns have fun restaurants, quaint shops, and in the case of Solvang, a lovely Danish atmosphere. Here are some highlights I would recommend if you’re in the area:
Bike Ride (or by car) from Buellton to Los Olivos
This is such a beautiful and pretty easy bike ride. There are a few gentle hills, but nothing too strenuous. There is a dedicated bike lane most of the way except for the couple miles through the town of Solvang which can have a bit of traffic. Along the way, you’ll see native wildflowers, vineyards, beautiful gates to the homes and wineries, even miniature ponies grazing in the pastures of their farm.
Global Gardens
Global Gardens is the oldest grower of olive trees in Santa Barbara county. They have numerous olive oils and balsamic vinegars which are available for tasting. And they are yummy! We bought several! They also have olive oil based and heavenly scented soaps, lotions and massage oils. Best of all, they are very friendly, share their knowledge, and take the time to make gift packages if you desire. They also have an oil/vinegar of the month club if you’d like to try products shipped to your home.
Home and Garden Treasures
J. Woeste has one of the best collections of garden accessories I have ever seen. And such fun items! From the giant adirondack chair at the entrance to windmills made of trowels, you’ll find unique accessories for every garden and gardener. We filled the back of our SUV!
