Winter Vegetables to Plant Now

January harvest: beautiful broccoli!
If you planted cool season veggies last fall, you should have plenty of greens, root vegetables and cabbage family crops ready to harvest. In my garden, I just finished harvesting the broccoli and pulling out the remaining lettuce plants because they’ve bolted. Now that there are empty spots in the garden, what to plant?
Because we still have about 3-4 months of cool-ish weather left, there’s plenty of time to plant a second round of cool season vegetables.
Here’s what I’ll be planting in January:
From transplants (six packs purchased at the nursery):
- Broccoli
- Lettuce
- Kale
- Spinach
From seed:
- Carrots
- Beets
- Peas
These are my favorites, but for other choices for Southern California, see chart by the University of California: A Year of Growing Vegetables.
Remember to add compost and organic fertilizer to your soil whenever you plant new plants or seeds. If you are gardening in pots, use fresh potting soil and organic fertilizer (according to package instructions).
Looking ahead: Warm season veggies are coming to the garden in March! This month we start seeds of these plants indoors (covered in my next post).
